Super Smash Bros Ultimate Season Wrap-Up

Amelia Green Dec 20th, 2023

Our SSBU Team has been highly successful throughout the season, hurdling us to second place in both the regular season and the NACE League Tournament! Coached by Pizza, our outstanding team is comprised of Asdagigafo, Diap, Hunter, Candy, and ShinyShoes. During the season, there were many times when our team seemed to simply breeze through opponents, but the team maintained fantastic sportsmanship and always had compliments for the opposing team at the end of matches. Our Vandals even encouraged the SSBU Team at Rigby High School through amazing scrims and practice. Each player has their own playstyle and main they prefer, but this season, we have seen a little branching out from them!

To begin, Asadagigafo – or more commonly referred to as Asda – has mained Meta Knight for the majority of the season. He has an astounding comprehension of the total utility of Meta Knight’s mobility, util, and weaknesses, allowing him to best against even disadvantageous matchups! However, another impressive note about Asda’s playstyle is that he has a large swath of characters that he can play even at a competitive level! Right after Asda is our Captain Falcon main, Diap! Diap is adept at setting up the game to launch vicious crits upon his opponents. While this character isn’t as mobile as Asda’s Meta Knight, Diap is a heavy hitter who keeps up once he’s started. There has yet to be a single change in his main from the beginning of the season, and the benefits definitely show in his gameplay! Hunter, one of our seriously dangerous players, solely mains Falco and has certifiable skill in him.

There was a crew battle in which Hunter was started as the first player, and he took 9 stocks before losing his final one. To note, he took at least four of those stocks, but he only had one left himself! Hunter’s skills are truly undeniable! Our fourth Vandal on the team would be Candy, who mains Byleth. Byleth is a versatile sword user who can change his weapon to fit long–, mid-, and short-range combat needs. Candy has demonstrated remarkable growth with his character throughout the season and shows what it takes to be on the varsity team! There are some fantastic matchups where Candy simply surpasses all expectations! The final member of the varsity team is ShinyShoes, who primarily mains Rosalina but has recently been trying out Mr. Game and Watch. As Rosalina, he has complete control over the character. He floats around the map effortlessly, even traveling dangerously under the stage to fully showcase his comprehensive understanding of his character. ShinyShoes quickly adapts to any opponent and exemplifies a calm, collected player even in the heat of a match! As Mr. Game and Watch, there have only been a few matches of ShinyShoes playing this character; however, he rapidly understood and made use of his character’s insane utility to counter the majority of his opponents.

One awe-inspiring game was the finals of the NACE Tournament against SAIT. While it is true that we lost that matchup, both teams’ playing was phenomenal! Our Vandals pushed the season #1’s down to their last players in both rounds! This intense game brought excitement for our staff as much as the players themselves! We enjoyed terrific gameplay on both sides, especially when one of the SAIT players switched their character from Hero to Cloud. Many moments caused much worry about who would win the tournament! Ultimately, our Vandals have done an excellent job for their first official year in the program!
